I am against this. Here is my arguement:
Can a biotechnology corporation own all rights of a gene that defines your genetic makeup? The answer is yes. Corporations, in fact, own bits of you right now; about 20% of your body has already been claimed! Should any person or group of people be able to dominate over life? These corporations use patents to practically own the gene they find to be useful. An excellent example is diseases because they are caused by genes; by finding a defect in gene number 6003 that causes cancer, you can own that gene. Find it, and own it. You get full rights to it- no one else can test, study, or even look at this gene you found. Sounds great? But corporations take advantage of these rights, and ruin the entire fairness of patents. They hold a gene all to themselves, so only one institute in all of America can test on this gene. It could be the gene to cure cancer and only one company would be able to work on it. This makes research go at one of the slowest possible paces. This utter selfishness of the corporation slows human advancement, like a fish trying to swim through Jell-O. If they discover the cure for a disease, THEY are the only ones who can sell it. They can overprice their cure for those average people who need it to live; forcing those people to spend ridiculous amounts, to get the help the truly NEED. For example, Myriad Genetics owns the BCRA gene (this is for Breast Cancer) and is charging over 3000 dollars for a test. As you can assume most women cannot afford this. Another case is when sick babies with a severe form of epilepsy had their diagnosis delayed and their treatment compromised because of a corporation patent. You have to get permission to save a baby? And they were almost denied! They may be called corporations, but in truth, they are monopolies, fierce abominations that prey on the needy.
